The eclipse occurred as the moon passed directly in front of the sun, blocking its light for those positioned in the path of totality. This path stretched across parts of Europe, including Spain, Portugal, Greenland, Iceland, and northern Russia [2, 3, 4]. In Spain, crowds gathered in cities such as Cádiz to watch the day turn to night.
Approximately 15.2 million people lived within the path of totality [1]. Outside this narrow corridor, many others experienced a partial eclipse. In Alaska, the moon covered as much as 28 percent [3] of the sun, while observers in Fairbanks saw as much as 35 percent [3] of the solar disk obscured.
