Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the relationship with France is India’s strongest bilateral partnership on a global scale during a briefing in New Delhi.

This strategic alignment signals India's intent to diversify its defense procurement and security architecture in the Indo-Pacific. By strengthening ties with a European power, India aims to balance regional influence and enhance its technological capabilities.

Misri spoke during a live briefing by the Ministry of External Affairs regarding a new defense deal and a broader strategic partnership. He said that France is a resident power in the Indo-Pacific. This designation recognizes France's ongoing territorial and military presence in the region, which aligns with India's own strategic interests in maritime security.

The briefing followed a recent visit to France by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to reports, the visit resulted in 13 [1] key outcomes, including deals involving trade, artificial intelligence, and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

Misri said, "Our relationship with France is our strongest bilateral relationship at a global scale." The defense deal forms a core part of this expanded cooperation, focusing on joint development and security integration.

The partnership extends beyond military hardware to include digital infrastructure and economic trade. These agreements aim to create a more resilient supply chain, and foster innovation through shared AI research.

India continues to leverage these ties to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific. The collaboration with France provides a critical pillar for India's diplomatic strategy in Asia.

Our relationship with France is our strongest bilateral relationship at a global scale.

The classification of France as a 'resident power' in the Indo-Pacific validates a strategic shift where India views European partners as essential anchors for regional stability. By integrating French defense technology and digital infrastructure, India is reducing its reliance on any single global supplier while strengthening its geopolitical position against regional competitors.
