Japanese authorities arrested two people after they allegedly drove with a store clerk on the hood of a car in Nagoya [1].
The incident highlights a violent escalation during a petty theft, where a routine retail interaction turned into a life-threatening situation for a staff member.
Police arrested Kazutaka Kitano, 45, and Yumika Sugio, 40 [2]. The pair are accused of stealing one pair of leggings [4] from the MEGA Don Quijote Nagoya main store in Genma-cho, Kita Ward [5].
According to reports, the crime occurred around 9:10 p.m. on June 7, 2024 [7]. During their attempt to flee the scene, the suspects forced a store employee, approximately 50 years old [3], onto the hood of their vehicle.
The suspects then drove with the employee on the car for a distance between 150 [5] and 170 meters [6] before shaking the victim off the vehicle. The employee sustained injuries as a result of the fall [1].
Legal classifications of the crime vary across reports. Some sources said the incident was robbery causing injury, while others said the case is being investigated as attempted murder [1, 3].
Authorities have detained the two suspects to determine the full circumstances of the theft and the subsequent assault [1].
“Suspects allegedly stole a single pair of leggings before forcing a store employee onto a vehicle.”
The discrepancy in legal charges—ranging from robbery causing injury to attempted murder—suggests that investigators are weighing whether the act of driving with a person on the hood constitutes an intent to kill. The extreme nature of the violence contrasted with the low value of the stolen item may indicate a volatile psychological state or a high-risk criminal tactic.
