The Korea Meteorological Administration issued the first heat-wave warning of the year for parts of the Yeongnam region on Thursday [1, 2].
This early onset of extreme heat signals a potentially volatile summer season for the peninsula. The warnings come as a strong high-pressure system and intense sunshine drive temperatures one to four °C above normal levels [2, 6].
The warning took effect at 11:00 KST on June 18 [1]. The Korea Meteorological Administration focused the alert on the Yeongnam region, specifically targeting Daegu-Gunwi and areas of Gyeongsangbuk-do, including Yecheon and Gyeongsan [1].
Forecasters expect midday temperatures in Daegu to reach 33 °C [2]. Similar peak temperatures of approximately 33 °C are anticipated for Gunwi, Yecheon, and Gyeongsan [1].
Other major cities are also seeing a rise in heat. In Seoul, temperatures are forecast to reach between 31 °C [2] and 32 °C [1] by midday. Earlier reports indicated the current apparent temperature in Seoul was between 23.1 °C [6] and 23.5 °C [1].
Despite the heat, the region will experience unstable weather. The Korea Meteorological Administration forecast scattered showers across inland areas, with rainfall amounts ranging from five to 40 mm [1]. These showers are expected to coincide with the high temperatures, creating humid conditions across Seoul, Jeonju, and Daejeon [1].
The agency continues to monitor the high-pressure system as it persists over the region. Residents in the affected Yeongnam areas are advised to take precautions against heat-related illnesses as the first official heat-wave warning of 2026 remains in place [1, 2].
“The Korea Meteorological Administration issued the first heat-wave warning of the year for parts of the Yeongnam region.”
The issuance of a heat-wave warning in mid-June suggests an accelerated transition to summer temperatures in South Korea. When extreme heat is coupled with scattered rainfall and high humidity, it increases the risk of heat exhaustion and complicates urban drainage and agricultural planning in the Yeongnam region.
